What a ceramic coating actually is

In one lineA hard, water-hating shell bonded on top of your gelcoat, so the gelcoat stops taking the abuse.

The word ceramic in every modern coating refers to silicon dioxide — silica, or SiO₂ — a compound derived from natural materials like quartz and sand.

Applied to a surface, it forms a chemical bond and seals the layer underneath with a hard, intensely hydrophobic barrier. Think of it as a candy shell over the finish you actually care about. Sun, minerals, dock grime and scrubbing hit the shell instead of the gelcoat.

That barrier does two jobs at once. It fills and levels the invisible pores and micro-abrasions in gelcoat, which is what produces a deeper gloss. And it stops contamination from getting a grip in the first place, which is what makes the next wash faster.

Without protection, those same pores hold water, minerals and dirt. Left there, they are what turn a glossy hull chalky and make routine maintenance take an entire Saturday.

Graphene is carbon arranged in a single-atom-thick lattice. Blended into a silica coating, it changes how the finished layer behaves.

A graphene-infused layer is more flexible and less brittle than silica alone, so it flexes with the surface instead of cracking. It is also slicker, which means water sheds at a lower angle and takes more contamination with it when it goes.

The property boat owners notice most is water spotting. Graphene disperses heat across the surface rather than letting it concentrate, so standing droplets are less likely to bake their mineral content into the coating on a hot afternoon — the single most common way a good finish gets ruined between washes.

Why a coated boat cleans itself

On bare gelcoat, water spreads into a flat film with a wide contact area. It grips the surface, sits where it lands, and evaporates in place — leaving every mineral it was carrying behind as a spot.

Water beads and leaves

On a coated surface the droplet pulls into a tall bead with barely any contact. It breaks free at a much shallower angle, and as it rolls it collects other droplets and the dirt in its path, then falls off the hull entirely.

Sliding angle is the slope at which a droplet breaks its bond with a surface and starts to move. Lower the sliding angle and water stops being something that sits on your boat and becomes something that leaves, carrying contamination with it. That is the whole mechanism behind “self-cleaning”.

It is also why protection saves time rather than just looking good. Water that leaves on its own does not pool in corners, does not dry into spots, and does not need to be chased with a towel.

A hydrophobic surface releases water at a much lower angle, so it sheets off at the ramp instead of drying into spots.

Dirt and grime bond to the coating instead of the gelcoat, so most of it releases with a rinse and a light wipe.

Application

How to put it on

Start clean and cool

Wash with Scrub Down and clear any hard water spotting with Mineral Mist+. If the boat has wax on it, strip it first. The coating has to bond to bare gelcoat, and wax sits in the way. Work in shade on a cool, dry surface.

Spray and spread

Mist a panel at a time and spread evenly with a clean microfiber. Work one section at a time rather than coating the whole boat at once — the product needs to be levelled while it is still wet.

Buff to clear

Flip to a dry microfiber and buff until the panel goes clear and slick with no streaking. If you see haze, you left too much product on the surface. Buff it out before it cures.

ReapplyUp to 6 months per application, depending on use and storage conditions (inside, outside, shaded, etc.). Most owners refresh every 4-6 weeks in peak season to maintain maximum performance.
Never over waxStrip any wax first. Wax blocks the bond and the coating will streak and wash off early. Over an existing ceramic it layers fine.
Cure timeKeep the surface dry for 12-18 hours while it cures to ensure maximum bonding strength.

Questions

Straight answers

Is a graphene spray the same as a professional ceramic coating?

No, and it is worth being straight about it. A professional multi-stage ceramic is thicker, harder, and can last for years, but it takes surface prep, controlled conditions and hours of labour. Graphene Ultra Shine is a spray-on coating you apply in a single pass, and it trades some of that longevity for a job you can actually finish in an afternoon and repeat whenever you want.

Will it fix oxidation or scratches that are already there?

It depends. For minor oxidation and swirl marks, ceramic spray coatings can help fill microabrasions and lessen the appearance of scratches and smooth out light oxidation. However — chalky, oxidised gelcoat needs to be compounded and polished to be fully restored. Apply the coating after correction and it will hold that finish far longer than wax or synthetic sealants.

Can I use it on glass and metal?

Yes — ceramic coatings work great on glass and metal in addition to traditional gelcoat and painted surfaces. On glass it is especially beneficial due to its hydrophobic properties, beading rain and spray off the windshield instead of drying into spots. Avoid non-skid decking and any surface you need to stand on.

Can I apply it over wax?

No. This is the one thing to get right. A silica coating has to bond directly with the pores of clean gelcoat or fiberglass, and wax sits between the two as a barrier. Applied over wax, the coating bonds to the wax instead of the hull — it will streak, fail, or wash off far sooner than it should. Strip the wax first and you will get the full life out of it. An existing ceramic coating is different: Graphene Ultra Shine layers over that without any problem.

My boat already has a ceramic coating. Should I still use this?

Yes, and this is one of the better reasons to use it. On a professionally coated boat, Graphene Ultra Shine works as a topcoat: an additional hydrophobic layer that sits above the base coating and takes the UV, minerals and grime first. It is sacrificial by design, so the wear happens to a layer you can reapply in an afternoon rather than to the coating you paid for. Used that way it extends the life and the performance of what is already on the hull.

How long does it last?

Up to 6 months per application, depending on use and storage conditions. For boats stored outdoors and used once a week or more, we recommend application every 4-6 weeks to ensure maximum protection and cleaning efficiency.

How do I know it is still working?

Watch the water. When a rinse still beads up and runs off in sheets, the coating is doing its job. When water starts to sit flat on the surface and dry in place, it is time to reapply.
